Back to School Night in Leesburg
Seldens Landing Elementary welcomed parental units of kindergarten and first grade students on Tuesday; third through fifth grade parents report on Thursday.
There's so much to know about school. What time is lunch? How much homework will my child have? What are the teacher's expectations for good behavior?
Parents are just as nervous about school starting as their children, and that's why they go to school once a year -- to ask the teacher questions.
Loudoun County Public Schools have Back to School Nights at every school. It's an election year, so candidates are outside to greet parents and add to the tumult of new sounds and stimulation.
When Seldens Landing Elementary, in Lansdowne, invited the parents of kindergarten, first, and second graders to visit on Tuesday evening, signs of digital learning were all around. A father took notes on his iPad during a plenary session with second grade teachers. Children played games using touchpad technology as they waited for their parents to get acquainted with their teachers.
Not all kids, though. Fourth grader Sarah Menchavez accompanied her first-grade sister, Chloe, and their mother, Melissa, to Back to School night. As the girls waited in the hall for their mother to meet with Chloe's teacher, Sarah buried her nose in a paper copy of "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane," a story about a china rabbit. Chloe studied her iPad.
Sarah said she prefers print-on-paper because "It helps me picture the book in my head."
Chloe observed that her iPad is bigger than her sister's book. "I like to read books," she said. "It's just that I don't have much time to do books because I have to get to bed."
Tyrone Lindsey, a parent, said he went to Back to School night in support of his first grade daughter and "to make sure she had enough to do" at school. It was a chance to talk to the teacher and to "get a feel for what expectations she has," he said.
