LTE: Del. May Wrong to Support Transportation Bill

The reader claims the legislation will not benefit the 33rd District, while raising their taxes.

It’s time for Delegate Joe May (R-33) to come clean. My mailbox is stuffed with his post cards touting how conservative and fiscally responsible he is and how he’s resolving transportation; that is not the reality.

He recently voted for the historically large $6 billion tax increase in the name of transportation. This has raised taxes on an extensive list from property to general sales tax, to internet sales, many of which you will have no choice but to engage in the transaction that taxes you. The genesis of this tax increase was a simple transportation bill, but somewhere along the way, it morphed into a monster that once again will fleece the taxpayer.

What does this mean for you personally? Whether or not you own a car, you will essentially be paying "extra" in the name of road repairs. Will this solve traffic problems in the 33rd district? Not at all, because there are three major new highway projects in areas of the Commonwealth with virtually no traffic, as well as Dulles Rail; all to the tune of $5.95 billion.

According to an analysis based on U.S. Census data by Ron Utt, a transportation specialist, the problem is not a lack of money, but misallocation and mismanagement of the funds thanks to poor leadership! I would say that is an understatement.

The $6 billion tax increase is a travesty!!! I simply can’t afford Joe May anymore. I will be voting for Dave LaRock on June 11 to bring new leadership and real change to Richmond.
