I was lucky enough to be there, and I would like everyone to know that Michelle Obama is a lovely, classy lady. She is genuinely nice, and caring in a real down-to-earth way. When someone fainted, she stopped her speech to make sure that person was taken care of. I was impressed by how well-spoken she was, and when I had the opportunity to shake her hand and speak with her afterward, she was very gracious and warm. God Bless her and her family!

I was there too but did not get a chance to shake her hand--wonderful. My wife and I were both impressed and although we have seen her on tv, to see her and hear her in person was special! She electrified the room. She is a great example for all and an outstanding rep. of our country. Shame that there are so many nasty name caller comments from others here.Hatred runs deep-

I was in the audience with my wife and was honored to be with the First Lady and I was glad that I had voted for her husband just that very day, The First Lady is a dynamic, feeling person. She told us why we should vote to re-elect President Obama; mainly because of his character and the fact that he is a man who speaks the truth without regard to what the audience may WANT to hear!"

1. He took over an economy that was worse than anyone thought. It is not where we want it but it is no longer losing jobs and is in fact gained jobs every month.
2. The stock market is doing very well, thank you
3. The auto loans help save American jobs (Romney would have let them fail)
4. Health care (costs still too high but now there is no pre-existing restriction) Students can stay on parents plan now. Also Pell Grants were saved.
6. Gays can now serve OPENLY (they have been in the military ever since 1959 when I first went into the Army.)
7. Women now get equal pay for equal work and equal protection (Ledbetter)
8. Dodd-Frank Wall Street regulations to help prevent a recurrence of 2008.
9. Improving women's health.
10. Closing the Medicare Prescription Drug "donut hole"
11. We are out of Iraq and getting out of Afghanistan,
Four more years!!!

How many people are now on disability and do not count towards the unemployment rate. Use the u6 numbers and you'll have a more accuirate unemployment number. Quit blaming the past adminstration after more then 3 years in office. Equal pay hmmmm, better not look at Obams cabinets. Looks like the economy was too big a task for this so-called President. I think GM stock closed at 24 dollars a share yesterday the USA has 500 million shares and would have to sell at 53 dollars a share to break even on the bailout, lovely! Going to need another bailout soon. What in the world does "improving womens health" mean?

Well, that's said like a man who doesn't have a clue. Improving womens' health means exactly what it says. It means giving women the right to choose their own care for their own bodies. It means not letting a bunch of old men legislators make rules that have nothing to do with womens' health but that cater to the opinions of a bunch of right wing neo-conservatives so they can get their vote. It means not passing laws that amount to transvaginal rape. It means funding clinics that help women detect breast cancer, prevent STDs, and offer health counseling. It means pretty much everything that the GOP doesn't support, which is why even though I am an Independent voter, I will be voting Democratic for the foreseeable future.

It took 8 years of Republican Mismanagement to squander a surplus by giving tax breaks to the rich and going into Iraq where we had no business going into. I was working in the Pentagon on 9/11 and NO ONE said Sadaam Hussein of Iraq did this--every officer I worked with said OSAMA BIN LADEN did this. We are not where we want to be but it is amazing how much our pres. has done despite all the nastiness from the R's in congress (take a look at congress' low approval rating) . As far as health care goes, the system does need tweaking but a strong Republican i know who dies of cancer recently said before she died that our pres, did not go far enough with health care! How many people are working today who would have been out of a job if we had followed Romney's plan to let the auto industry GO BANKRUPT? How can you expect someone to clean up a mess accumulated over 8 years in just three years? By the way what is Governor Romney's plan today to fix this? Write it in pencil because it will probaly change tomorrow.

Obama is the absolute worst president in history! Open your eyes, he's changing this country alright, leading it to the crapper. What a great foreign policy his has, oh whoops, I mean covering up his lies. Obama and his so called administration is a joke. Romney has class, doesn't lie his ass off, he tells the truth, and will win, America is too smart for Obama Hussein's socialistic b.s.

I think it's pretty official that right now Bush owns the title of worst president in history. He created all of the problems that Obama has been trying to fix - and Obama has been handicapped by the GOP refusing to work with him on anything - even common sense things (hello - Romney's health plan when he was governor?). And Romney's foreign policy is... well... all of our foreign allies are just so thrilled by Romney's comments to them (I'm sure the British loved his comments on their handling of the Olympics). Great example of foreign policy - insulting your allies! Hmm... Romney-class - putting your dog on the roof when you travel? Seriously? And yes - Romney tells the truth - when he's not in public - loved that 47% comment - it really did show exactly what he thought of most of the people in the US (as well as displaying a total ignorance of the facts, since most of those people had paid payroll taxes but didn't make enough to pay federal tax). Gee, he sure would make a great president if I were a billionaire. Sorry, Obama gets my vote. At least he actually knows what real life is like.

Thanks to Mister Fasolo for his service! Your service does not make you a authority If you are correct then why has Obama let the tax cuts stay in place? The GM stock is at 24.75 today yet we have to sell at $53.00 in order to recoup our bailout money. It was Obama and dear Nancy who gave the bird to the republicans because they had the majority in votes when he took office. Then when he does not have a majority he blames republicans for not working with him, sounds to familiar. Read some if you want Romney's plans. Obamas plan is to reduce the work force and then say unemployment is down, yikers! The British lost 700 million dollars on the Olympics, guess the Romster had that right do we want to be like Spain 25.1% unemployment,Russia is our enemy and the Palestinians do not ever want peace with the state of Israel. Yes I do not want to fund clinics for your health care.

True my service does not make me an expert, but I do know the Iraq and Sadamm did not attack us and the war was needlessly costly in terms of lives and treasure. We feel the impact today and will continue to feel it for years to come.
Obama let the tax cuts stay in place so he could get the R’s to vote to stop our country from going bankrupt. It is called COMPROMISE which somehow has become a bad word.
GM: would you rather have had more people out of work like we would have had if we had followed Romney’s advice to let the auto industry go bankrupt?
I agree that we Dems did a poor job of pre-planning and gaining consensus for the Affordable Care Act. The plan needs tweaking and I am glad to see that Romney now agrees to keep the pre-existing condition provision and to allow students to stay on their parents' plans instead of REPEALING "Obamacare" on the first day he is in office as he has said before. This is an example of why it is hard to see how Romney stands on anything. It is a full time job.(the 47% comment says a lot about his priorities and how he feels about those who are not as wealthy as he is). Oh, but now that comment was a mistake ?
It was Romney who helped companies ship jobs overseas and who is against (or was against) hiring more teachers, firemen or police officers. London Olympics
Romney was concerned about SECURITY at the London games and the games went off without a hitch so where was he right? Russia is our enemy. No, Russia WAS our enemy.

You tell 'em, Anthony! BTW, Bush started the war in Iraq to "get" Bin Laden, thereby setting in motion an extremely costly war which didn't even accomplish what he said he was going to do. Guess who actually nailed Bin Laden? Yeah, that was Obama!

When I was working in my cubicle in room 1E677 after 911, I used to end all my emails with a quote from President Bush: "We will bring the terrorists to Justice or Justice to the terrorists". Well he was not able to do so, but President Obama did "bring justice to the chief terrorist, OSAMA!) and the R's have trouble giving the president (in his role as commander-in-chief) credit for giving the order to do so. How sad.

Joe, your name calling doesn't bother me personally, since I consider the source. You are entitled to your opinion, and I am entitled to mine, but civilized people know better than to resort to name calling. Techniques like that are used by people who are intellectually incapable of thinking and debating in a civilized manner. As far as I am concerned, you are little more than an e-version of a schoolyard bully. As I said, I am an independent voter - I don't vote along party lines - but the comments that I have seen here and on other Patch blogs by GOP supporters makes me definitely sure that I am going to vote Democratic in this election. The Democratic supporters post comments that include facts and polite discourse. The GOP supporters by and large call people names. 'Nuff said.

After speaking Mrs. Obama came straight over to me and hugged me, gave me a kiss on the cheek. I looked into her eyes and told her my husband has brain cancer and would appreciate her prayers. She told me that she and her family would be praying for him and to tell him to stay strong. I will remember that for the rest of my life, because I beiieved every word she said. She was believiable, and down to earth, I felt like she was in my living room explaining the Presidents agenda. I felt the love and concern and if her husband holds the same values, then he's the man for the job. Mitt Romney has no concern for everyday people like me.

Joanne, my prayers are also with you and your husband! We are dealing with the same health issues in our family. The President and Mrs. Obama clearly understand the importance of affordable health care for all families, regardless of income. Mitt Romney's callous comments and disregard for the "47%" shows me that he doesn't understand how it is to have a loved one facing a serious illness without the benefit of being able to draw on a trust fund to pay for treatment. When Mrs. Obama talks about her background and growing up, you know she understands what it's like for ordinary people and their families because she's been there. I was at the rally, and I felt her compassion and concern for all people. She is truly a lovely person, inside and out.

I never said I was civil and if you base your votes on what people are blogging instead of what the candidates are telling us then that puts you in the group that should not be allowed to vote. There are no party affiliations in Virginia we are all independents as far as I know. Sounds like you need to do some homework though.

Thank God we live in America where everyone has the right to an opinion they can express openly. Where we can vote for whomever we please and feel good about our vote. Each of us has to come to terms as to what's more important to us. No President can fix every problem. Some of us need to use the rights of America to better our lives without looking for someone else to change things, our changes need to start in our own communities. We need to stop blaming our teachers for the lack of success with our children, stop buying our kids with gadgets and electronics. We need to teach them respect for themselves and others. Spend more time as families and turn off the TV's and computer games. We need to stand up to the community drug dealers and let them know we won't tolarate that kind of activity in our community's. We need to reach out to each other, help on a community level, protect our children and our elderly.

I agree with all that you wrote. I would only add that Teachers AND parents need to work TOGETHER and not AGAINST each other in raising children to be good citizens. Standards need to be raised too. Here in Loudoun County it is not unusual to have 60%-70% of middle school students on the honor roll. Football players only need to pass five subjects with a D (60%) and they can pay football. Aren't they going to school to get an education?? Passing the SOL's is EVERYTHING to the detriment of teaching students HOW TO THINK. Relook priorities, turn off the tv and the electronic gadgets and spend more time together as a family!!!

Sandra

Personally, I think the SOLs are a waste of time and money. They are actually dumbing things down in order to accommodate teaching to the test. In one case, they were discouraging honors English students in 8th grade from writing more than the minimum required - for example, kids who wrote more than 5 sentences per paragraph were marked down a grade because the writing rubric called for 5 sentences per paragraph. What does this accomplish??? We should be teaching our kids to think for themselves, and to go beyond the minimum!
