Loudoun Grown Event Showcases Rural Economy, Purcellville

Third annual Loudoun Grown Expo has grown exponentially each year and promised more vendors this year.

More vendors have signed on than ever for what Purcellville Mayor Bob Lazaro anticipates will be the biggest Loudoun Grown Expo yet. In its third year, the expo runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Bush Tabernacle in the town.

“The first year, we had about 1,000 people attend, the second year, about 2,000,” Lazaro said. “This year we are expecting many more.”

The event, organized by the Town of Purcellville, provides an opportunity to “showcase what makes Loudoun unique and what makes Purcellville a great place to live and work,” Lazaro said, adding that attendees may notice some changes this year to make the event bigger and better.

One noticeable change will be the addition of food and drink vendors outside the Tabernacle, including Fun Country Kettle Corn, Good Grubbin’, Magnolias at the Mill, Monk’s BBQ and The Roving Italian. Diners can sit inside at tables located around the expo.

To create a farmers’ market atmosphere, vendors this year plan to sell more of their products, such as fresh cheese and produce.

The Shamrock Music Shoppe has sponsored local performers for the event, including Miguel Andros Aubertin, I Am Bread-Ami & Brade, and Sheila Marie.

Lazaro said the event is a great way to bring people to Purcellville and to see the Tabernacle, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With geothermal heating and cooling, the “green” building is one of just three buildings of its kind in Virginia, architecturally, he said.

“We hope people will come and take some time to shop in Purcellville and enjoy our many restaurants and shops,” Lazaro said. “There is a lot to see in town. This event demonstrates the strength of the rural economy in Loudoun, and Purcellville is at the center of it.”

Lazaro also said the town plans to launch a “Shop Purcellville” program in the spring to encourage people to buy locally. Merchants can sign up to participate in the program, which will offer discount cards.

Some of the wineries participating this year include North Gate Vineyard, Willowcroft Farm Vineyards, Fabbioli Cellars, Above Ground Winery, Dry Mill Vineyards and Winery, Notaviva Vineyards, 8 Chains North Winery, Bogati Bodega and Vineyard, and Bluemont Vineyard.

Corcoran Brewing will also be there for the first time.  And a returning spirits vendor is Catoctin Creek Distillery.
