Restaurant Review: The Georgetown Cafe & Bakery

The restaurant offers dine-in or take-out family-style food such as soups, signature salads, sandwiches, and desserts.

 

This week's restaurant review led me to the Georgetown Cafe & Bakery, which has operated on S King Street for over 35 years. The restaurant offers dine-in or take-out family-style food such as soups, signature salads, sandwiches, and dessert. 

The interior defintely takes you back to the day when passing travelers would crash for the night and get a hot meal. The Leesburg Colonial Inn, built in the early 1700s, is located just upstairs.

The restaurant decor could be updated. One of the booths was torn and the chairs weren't very comfortable, but I definitely sensed the colonial days of Leesburg. 

For lunch, I chose the Ambassador, a traditional French Dip with sliced roast beef served hot with special horseradish sauce. It normally comes accompanied by fried potatoes but they allowed me to get a side of potato salad instead. 

I waited about ten minutes for my meal to arrive. I enjoyed a sweet tea, which I'm guessing was Lipton Brisk, and tried to make out which talk show was playing over the radio. 

When my meal arrived I was given extra napkins and my cup was refilled. Looking at my plate I didn't know where to start. The last time I had a really good au jus was at La Madeleine, in Reston. Since then, it's been hard to find one that even compares. But as soon as I took the first bit, minus the juice, I fell in love. The beef was moist and tender and the bread was soft.

The second bite included a dip in the au jus and although it was on the salty side I enjoyed it very much. The only thing I felt should have been on this sandwich was a slice or two of cheese. 

The horseradish sauce was OK. I only used it on half of my sandwich. There was nothing really wrong with it...I'm just not a big horseradish person. As for the potato salad...it was also yummy and tasted just the way I like it. 

The entire meal cost $8.95. They also have a children's menu, which is $4.95 for children under 10. I may consider returning in just a couple of weeks when my family visits the first weekend in June.

I have never eaten here because every time I walk by it is like a ghost town. They definitely need to do some updating to draw more people in. This may make me reconsider, thanks for the review!

Thanks, Annette. It was quiet when I was there...maybe three tables were taken. At the same time it was kind of nice. Service was quick.

Hi, Locally the group of restaurants that are owned by the same guy, including Georgetown Cafe, have a bad reputation. Bella Luna, Green Tree, Balls Bluff Tavern, for example. Locals here in town don't eat at those restaurants and I don't understand what is keeping them open - they are often vacant. Wish they would shut down and make room for more new and clean places that are more like the Wine Kitchen, MacDowell, Fireworks, Palio, King St. Coffee, etc. etc.

The owner inherited the buildings, so he has virtually no cost. They all share a common kitchen, and the staff are generally tenants of his rental housing as well. So I'd have to guess there's something a bit odd going on, particularly given the common countries of origin of many of the employees and the fact that there aren't a lot of work visas available for foreign kitchen staff...
