Road Renamed Per Leesburg Woman's Request

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to rename Bears School Road to Carters School Road during their meeting on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to rename Bears School Road, near the Dulles Airport, to Carters School Road at the request of Leesburg resident Christena Rose Martyn Fulcher.

According to a press release sent on Wednesday by Leesburg District Supervisor Ken Reid, Fulcher and her daughter, Carolyn Lineberry, have been advocating renaming the road for 20 years.

Fulcher attended the one‐room Carter’s School from 1930 until 1937 and was determined to see the road receive its historically correct name. While there was a Bear’s School, it was relocated several miles north.

“I am glad to be able to play a part in bringing closure to this issue for one of Loudoun’s eldest residents," Reid said. He jointly sponsored the item with Dulles District Supervisor Matt Letourneau. "Renaming a road is a small thing, but it is very important to her. I am pleased that our Board stepped up to the plate to rename the road after this historic school."

Lineberry told Leesburg Patch that both her and her mother have worked "so hard" on getting the road name changed.

"I was so thankful that I could go before the board and do all of that and it's just really neat to know that it will be done," Lineberry said.

As of publication time, there is no set date for when the road sign will be replaced. Lineberry said she hopes to be contacted when a date has been determined and would like to have a small ceremony when the change takes place.

Can we get a little more reporting? Where is this road? A graphic will be nice. How many folk will be impacted by the change? On a historical note where is the Bear School and how did the road get misnamed in the first place. If the Bear School name is being removed, will it now slip into obscurity and is that appropriate? If the schools were both once located here why not Bear-Carter Schools Road? Who attended the schools? While I applaud local coverage of these things, I am frustrated when they leave so many questions unanswered. Yet, often when it is a crime report there will be nauseating detail provided.
