If you've ever been to Tuscarora Mill Restaurant and had the bread, you know that it's certainly among the best in town. That's why South Street Under is such a brilliant idea: it's basically a way to take the fantastic bread that the bakers at Tuskie's were already making and sell it directly to customers.
Of course, while the bread is still the star, South Street Under has turned into so much more than a bakery: it's one of the hottest lunch spots for downtown workers - especially when the weather is nice.
Now that it's spring, the colorful umbrellas are unfurled on South Steet's extensive outdoor seating area, bringing families and co-workers out to enjoy the beautiful weather and the delicious sandwiches that the cafe has to offer.
With a fantastic selection of vegetarian and meat sandwiches as well as a kids menu, everyone will be able to find something at South Street.
Although I'm a fan of their egg salad sandwich, the veggie Muffaletta is what I tend to order again and again. Grilled zucchini and squash with provolone and olive spread on their fresh-baked foccacia: it's pretty amazing.
My friend, however, loves Turkey Day, which brings a little taste of the holidays to any time of the year. Smoked Turkey, havarti, cranberry-horseradish sauce on pumpkin pecan bread.
You can also get some homemade soup with whatever sandwich you choose. Minestrone and potato leek are available daily, in addition to a variety of daily and seasonal selections.
The best thing about eating at South Street is that you can kill two birds with one stone: eat lunch and pick up ready-to-cook meals for dinner. Quiche, lasagna, and a variety of sides are available in their cooler. Or come in the morning for coffee and pastries. South Street Under has you covered no matter what time of day it is.
South Street Under is open Monday-Friday 7 am to 6 pm, Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm, and Sunday from 8 am to 4 pm.
