Two Dulles Toll Hearings Remain in Reston, McLean

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority has planned the hearing to get input about proposed toll increased to pay for the Metro Silver Line.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority announced this past week that the public comment period has opened regarding proposed toll rate increases along the Dulles Toll Road to help pay construction costs for the Metro’s Silver Line project as well as road operations.

Under proposal, the combined main plaza and ramp tolls would double from the existing rate to $2.25 for 2-axle vehicles over the next three years based on the following schedule:

  • $2.75 in 2013
  • $3.50 in 2014
  • $4.50 in 2015

Informational about the proposed toll increases, titled "On-Line Open House," can be found at www.mwaa.com/tollroad. Public comments can be submitted online or through the mail through Sept. 16, click here for address, or in person at one of the hearings, which will be conducted in an open house format at the locations, dates and times:

  • Wednesday, September 12, 2012 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
    South Lakes High School Cafeteria
11400 South Lakes Drive, Reston, VA 20191
  • Thursday, September 13, 2012 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
    Spring Hill Elementary School
8201 Lewinsville Road, McLean, VA 22102

The hearings also will include exhibits about the rail project, its cost and financing plan, potential improvements that may be made to the road, and the cost of operating the road. Representatives from MWAA will be present.

MWAA has been tasked with overseeing the construction of Metrorail through the Dulles Corridor. As part of this program, Virginia transferred the operation of the Dulles Toll Road to the authority in 2008 under a 50-year permit to pay for rail construction and road operation and maintenance.

By signing this petition I am saying NO to skyrocketing tolls on the Dulles Toll Road. I want Virginia to take control by putting the Toll Road users first instead of making them the cash cow for other projects. Stop strangling our roads and the region's economy with tolls and traffic congestion.
I say NO TOLL INCREASE.

We can stop these toll increases if we demand our elected officials take responsibility. Take our road back from MWAA and protect our communities. http://ashburn.patch.com/articles/lte-mwaa-s-cost-cutting-excuse-don-t-add-up

SAY NO - they just announced a couple days ago that the metro has MILLIONS of dollars left over/surplus this year - they can use their SURPLUS to pay for this and leave the already ridiculous fees on the Dulles toll road ALONE!

The press release is very misleading. WMATA / Metro is a very poorly run operation that is only announcing that OPERATING costs were less than expected, they referred to this as an operating surplus. That probably means their accountants were not including interest, repayment of loans, depreciation and possibly administrative costs. They did not release any details. Why? Wanna guess?
Far more significant is that the situation appears unchanged where over $13 billion of replacements are needed. The politicians are just ignoring and lying about the cash requirements.

The fares on Metro need to be raised to have the users pay for the capital costs, including for the Silver Line. Businesses near the stations should also pay more.
VA's subsidies for interest in the next two years are likely to keep voters & commuters asleep until it is too late. Users and businesses should pay the capital costs or cancel Phase 2.
Metro is a wreck, to suggest they have a surplus is, in a word, ridiculous. Adding the Silverline to it is like putting an upscale addition onto a dilapidated shack (Metro).
