Update: Two Zebras Escape Leesburg Animal Park

Loudoun County Sheriff's Office and animal park staff were able to capture both animals around 3 p.m. The zebras were returned safely to the zoo.

Two zebras managed to escape from the Leesburg Animal Park on Monday, Nov. 28 around 12 p.m. after a gate was left open in the park. Several calls were made to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office that both animals had been seen in the area of Route 15 near Valley Brooke Lane.

Public Information Officer Kraig Troxell said members of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office attempted to contain the animals from walking into traffic or causing other issues in the community.

Director Shirley Johnson said staff was onsite throughout the ordeal and were able to contain the animals in a nearby field while waiting for the park's veterinarian and trailer to arrive.

The animals were tranquilized and returned safely to the park around 3 p.m. Both zebras are reported to be healthy and doing well.

Great Job to Dr Jay Joyce of Total Equine Veterinary Asscoiates for his incredible darting abaility and ensuring that the Zebras were caught safely without injury to Zerba, people, or property. He saved the day.

Loudoun might not be the best place for them to roam, but seeing them in an open space should tell us something.....they don't belong in that zoo.
