Ready For No-Kids-Allowed Dining?

A planned sushi bar in Alexandria with an 18-and-over policy is causing a stir.

There are a few restaurants where you wouldn't take small children. Maybe the waitresses wear shirts that are too tight, or the crowd gets a little rowdy on game night. But the Del Ray community in Alexandria is getting ready for a different type of adults-only experience - an upscale sushi restaurant that will be for an 18-and-over crowd. • See: Preparations Underway for Upscale Sushi Bar in Del Ray Leave the bibs, baby food — and babies — at home, along with any toddlers or teens with a hankering for raw seafood. They'll have to settle for kid-friendly fare at neighboring restaurants.   Is it good business to chase off the dollar of families for a little peace and quiet (and a few less baby-burping incidents)? Take our poll and tell us…

I have teenagers and love the idea of leaving them at home. They are old enough to babysit and charge way less than $18/hr and would be happy to babysit other parents who need a date night. I will go to this restaurant if the food is good, and especially knowing it will be quiet. There are plenty of kid-friendly restaurants on the Avenue and I don't know why having just one that excludes kids is …   more ›

Weird Virginia: Naked Driver, Forgotten Weed, High-Tech Art and High-End Funny Money

Plus, Iguana models, cell towers in disguise, a Ladybug exodus and two birds ask, "Who cooks for you?"

Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening somewhere in the area. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Drivers at the Lake Ridge commuter lot near Interstate 95 saw more than the road crews and heavy machinery that have become standard commute scenery. Prince William County Police arrested a man April 19 when they found him dancing naked on the hood of his car.  Without question, you should surrender to authorities when police have identified you as the suspect in a grand-larceny case. But we feel compelled to caution suspects about checking their pockets after a 27-year-old Annandale man turned himself in. Police in Falls Church say they …

Leesburg's BusyConf Co-Sponsors 'Hackathon' at TJ High School

The one-day coding contest mines young minds for new ideas; the event could lead to an internship.

When Stephen Glass reported about a company paying big money to hire a computer hacker, it was sensational, but untrue. But Hack TJ, a one-day coding contest this weekend at Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, is for real. Co-sponsored by BusyConf, a software start-up located in the Leesburg Mason Enterprise Center, the “hackathon” pits high school students against one another to create cool new product – such as mobile apps, websites or widgets – in 24 hours. At the end of the event, each student team will present their product to the judges – they have just three minutes – who will select the winner based on innovation, technical difficulty and quality of the implementation. “I am eager to encourage the next generation of …
