Leesburg’s Finance Department Receives Excellence in Financial Reporting Award for 27th Straight Year

Release, Town of Leesburg:

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has awarded a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the Town of Leesburg for its Fiscal Year 2013 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). Leesburg has received this award for twenty-six consecutive years.

The GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. Attainment of this award represents a significant accomplishment by a government organization and its management. In order to receive the certificate, an impartial panel judged the Town’s CAFR as meeting the high standards of the GFOA’s program, including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate the Town’s financial story and to motivate users to read the CAFR.

“The annual budget document usually gets more public attention than the CAFR,” commented John Wells, Leesburg’s Town Manager. “However, the budget is a plan for the coming year, while the CAFR demonstrates that we actually did what we said we were going to do with the taxpayers’ money. Leesburg residents and taxpayers should know that this achievement puts Leesburg in the top tier of communities across the country, in terms of financial management.”

The Government Finance Officers Association is a non-profit professional association serving over 17,600 government finance professionals throughout North America.
