When Daylight Saving Time 2014 begins on Sunday, March 9, you'll lose an hour of sleep but gain an hour of sunlight.

What to do with that extra light?

Well, in our area, the W&OD Trail seems an obvious choice.

The trail runs from Shirlington near I-395 to Purcellville in Loudoun County, and it's open from 5 a.m. till 9 p.m., well into the dark hours — but with an hour more of light than during this pesky, long-lived winter.

The 100-foot-wide W&OD has been called "the skinniest park in Virginia," but it's long, too, with 45 miles of paved trail for walking, running, bicycling and skating and 32 miles of adjacent gravel trail for horseback riding.

Cars are not permitted on the trail, which, unfortunately, hasn't kept wayward drivers from making the W&OD their own. So, all the better that you have that daylight. Time to pedal!

Remember: Clocks spring forward at 2 a.m. Sunday.
