Dulles Greenway's Drive For Charity Set for May 16

Your tolls on that day benefit local organizations as part of an annual community drive.

On Thursday, May 16, paying the toll on the Dulles Greenway will have special meaning for local charities. Event organizers are gearing up for the 8th annual Drive For Charity, a one-day event that raises thousands of dollars that go directly back into the local community.

“Each year, the money raised has increased, and last year’s event raised $261,000, divided among five local charities: The March of Dimes, Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter, Every Citizen Has Opportunity (ECHO), Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and the Fresh Air/Full Care,” said Terry Hoffman, spokesman for the Dulles Greenway. “Regardless of what you think of the Greenway or if you do not usually drive on it, drive it May 16 to help these organizations.”

In addition, Hoffman said they have set up a Dulles Greenway Scholarship fund that awards 12 local students – one from each county high school – $1,500 scholarships. Students are selected based on citizenship and community service.

Chuck Harris, of Fresh Air/Full Care, expressed gratitude for the assistance from the Dulles Greenway.

“The generosity, community leadership and perseverance displayed by the Dulles Greenway year after year during their annual Drive for Charity are unparalleled within the Loudoun business community,” he said, describing $50,000 the Greenway donated to send nearly 100 children of Loudoun County’s working poor and at-risk children to summer camp programs. “Although Loudoun County’s poverty and its effects on children of the working poor is invisible to most, it has not been to the Dulles Greenway. They have been leaders in doing something about it.”

Tina Cavucci, of the Maryland-National Capital Area Chapter of the March of Dimes, said Greenway owner Toll Road Investors Partnership II’s (TRIP II), “generosity and commitment to the community is highlighted by their annual Drive for Charity, where a portion of the day’s tolls fund the March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.”
