Gabriella Miller Act Heads to President's Desk

Kids First Research Act honoring Loudoun girl prioritizes federal funding for pediatric medical research.

Supporters are celebrating congressional approval for The Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act, prioritizing federal funding for pediatric medical research. The measure was sent to to the president Tuesday. 

Diagnosed at age 9 with an inoperable brain tumor the size of a walnut, Gabriella passed away in 2013. She was a fierce advocate for pediatric research and she was named Loudoun County's Volunteer of the Year for 2013.

The Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act prioritizes funding for research focused on medical battles like pediatric cancer and autism.

“So often everyone is focused on what Congress cannot accomplish that we overlook the good that can be done when both parties work together," said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va. 

"One courageous young girl, Gabriella Miller, inspired bipartisan action to help research, treat, and cure pediatric diseases and disorders," he said. "When people would remark that Gabriella was wise beyond her years, she would tell them that having a brain tumor means you have to grow up real fast. And so a 10-year-old girl was battling for more pediatric research at the same time she battled for her life.”

Senate approval Tuesday was celebrated by Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, both Virginia Democrats.

“I’m proud we were able to pass this legislation that honors Gabriella Miller, her family, and her inspiring work as an advocate for pediatric disease research," Kaine said.
