When patients are diagnosed with diabetes, they often are left with many questions about how to manage the disease and where to go for help.

Fortunately for local residents, they now have access to expanded patient care at Inova Loudoun Hospital's Diabetes Center in Leesburg.

The Diabetes Center held a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday at Cornwall Campus.

Previously located in Lansdowne, the Diabetes Center now has double the space, with 2,100 square feet. The new space allows the center to provide more classroom and patient consulting space, and therefore help more people manage their diabetes.

The center specializes in offering nutrition monitoring, insulin injection instruction, classes for diabetes management and general patient consulting services.

"Many people don't realize that this type of patient care is covered by insurance, including Medicare," said Traci Carter, a manager at the center. "We have had wonderful outcomes at the center including weight loss, improving blood sugar, and therefore preventing complications associated with diabetes. We are all about prevention here."

The number of people with diabetes is rising in Loudoun County. According to statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Virginia Department of Health, there are more than 23,000 people in the county who have diabetes and more than 100,000 with pre-diabetes.

H. Patrick Walters, Chief Executive Officer of Inova Loudoun Hospital spoke during the ceremony about the importance of preventative diabetes care.

"This is an important part of the healthcare infrustructure,” he said. “Diabetes can cause serious health issues and to have this dedicated group here to make sure patients get education and support makes a huge difference."

Mayor Kristen Umstattd said it was exciting news that Inova Loudoun had expanded its presence in the town.

"Inova is nationally recognized for its excellent quality care and it makes me doubly proud it has chosen Leesburg for its Diabetes Center," she said.

Delegate Randy Minchew (R-10) said, "What sets Inova apart is its holistic approach to patient care and community service. This is another example of how Inova does it right."
