Inova Loudoun to Host Children's Book Signing

Local author's work about therapy dog, "The Beamer Book Series," helps kids feel at ease with doctors.

For years, Cindy Chambers, who serves on the board of has observed children come to the hospital for medical care and wondered how she could help ease their fear of the hospital experience.

Chambers wished the kids had a way to meet the wonderful doctors and other health professionals she has worked with.

So she decided to write a book series to help children feel more aware of how a hospital works and introduce them to the doctors and nurses who are there to help them.

The four-book series, entitled The Beamer Book Series, features a dog named Beamer as the main character. In the books, Beamer is able to introduce many of the people he has met in the hospital while working as a therapy dog.

Inova Loudoun Hospital is hosting a launch event for the series from 4 to 5 p.m. Thursday in the second floor museum area.

This is a free event and the public is invited to attend. There will be book giveaways, books for sale and the main characters of the books -- including  the hospital's real life Beamer the dog --will be on hand for photos.

Chambers is donating all of the profits from the book sales to charity, including Inova Loudoun Hospital.

“There is a wonderful feeling that this creates with a circle of giving,” Chambers said.

The author has also created an interactive website to complement the books, Tellmetown.com. Children and their families will be able to go to the site to visit the characters from The Beamer Book Series.  They will also be able to play games, learn about health, life events and more.

“The whole idea is that this is the gift that keeps on giving, in lots of different ways,” Chambers said.

“Each part of these books is giving somehow and people can feel that they are making a difference,” she added.

Inova Loudoun Hospital is located at 44045 Riverside Parkway, Leesburg, Va.
