Leesburg Hosts 19th MLK March

Groups from around the county honored Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King Jr. with a march, commemorative plaques Monday morning.

The Town of Leesburg hosted its 19th annual march honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Monday morning.

Crowds representing various area organizations gathered in front of the Loudoun County Courthouse prior to 10:30 a.m. The parade was led by a contingent from the Leesburg Police Department and a marching band composed of students from Heritage and Tuscarora high schools.

The march was organized by the “I Have a Dream Committee,” which formed in 1992, and was initially composed of oudoun Douglass Alumni Association, the Baha’I Community of Loudoun, the Loudoun County branch of the NAACP and Bluemont Concert Series.

New this year were 17 permanent granite markers, which memorialize King, and are installed along the parade route.

These were installed in the sidewalk along East Market Street by the committee in conjunction with the Leesburg Town Council at a cost of more than $2,000.
