May Day Fun Run supports Lovettsville Community Park

Runners, walkers and dogs take to the course in Lovettsville Community Park, have fun, and raise money to complete the park

The inaugural Lovettsville May Day Fun Run brought out seasoned runners, neighbors, dogs and a whole lot of people who support getting the Lovettsville Community Park finished and open to the public.

For now, the 90 acre park just across East Broad Way from the Community Center, is operating under a special needs permit from the county and can hold only five events per year. At least until a second entrance is constructed near the elementary school on South Loudoun Street, the park will not be open to the public full time.

Plans for the park include equestrian trails and facilities, baseball and other sports.

Proceeds from the fun run will help raise the money to get the park open.

The 5k fun run started the day a little past 8:30 a.m., May 1, with a few one-mile runners included in the group. A few minutes after the runners disappeared behind the tree line to the north, the 5k walkers started off, followed by the 5k (or one-mile) dog walkers. Justin Fritzius, 26, of Purcellville, captured the 5K run by a large margin in a time of 18:03 (a time he called “terrible”). Fritzius ran in a 5K the day before in Washington, D.C.
