Patch Picks

In this week's edition of Patch Picks, we tackle summer reading in all different forms.

When you think of summer reading, chances are you think of lazing by the pool or on the beach with a paperback in hand. While relaxation is always key, here are a few other ways you can catch up on your summer "reading."

Listen to stories about life in the Ukraine, as told by a Peace Corps volunteer. The event takes place at the Ashburn Library and will feature a slideshow, traditional folk songs and a hands-on Ukranian experience.

Stop by any branch of the Loudoun County Public Library for Tales from the Web, their summer reading program. Kids can register for the program and pick up their challenge card. In addition, there will be performances from Barry Louis Polisar, Mad Science of Washington, Rainbow Puppets, visiting authors, and professional artists.

On Friday, June 24, head over to the Ashburn Library for Shark Tales. Kids aged 5-7 will listen to a Hawaiian folk tale and make a shark tooth necklace.

Stock up on those summer paperbacks and more during the Loudoun Library Foundation's giant annual book sale. You can get everything here: paperbacks, hardbacks, records, CDs, DVDs and software. Best of all, it runs the entire weekend, Friday through Sunday.
