This weekend, thousands of sports competitors will be descending on Leesburg’s for the Super Spartan 8-mile obstacle race.
Competitors of all ages will be participating Aug. 25 and Aug. 26 in the day-long events, which culminate in a festival featuring entertainment, raffles, food, beverages, vendors and games.
"Spartan Race is thrilled to be coming back to Virginia. With as much growth as we've had in 2012, it's nice to come back to such incredible communities and we look forward to all the new faces we'll see in addition to the familiar ones from last year,” Spartan founder Joe Desena said.
There will be a special heat honoring, empowering and motivating wounded veterans that will take place at 9:30 a.m on Saturday. Team X-T.R.E.M.E. and their Warrior Athletes will don gas masks and skydive combat wounded Army Veteran, Sgt. Noah Galloway into the Super Spartan Festival area before joining wounded warriors from across the nation for the Hero Heat.
“Spartan Races are about getting off your couch and getting back to your primal roots. It's the most fun you'll ever have with 12,000 of your closest friends. We're also excited to have Team X-T.R.E.M.E. on hand, a parachute drop into the festival area is a Spartan first," Desena said.
Kids are also invited to participate as part of a coordinated effort with the Kids Fit Foundation. Children ages 4 to 13 can enjoy the scaled-down version of obstacles and a mini-festival area with games and challenges. Registration for kids is $30 at the event/$25 pre-registration. Heats will start between noon and 1 p.m. Each registrant will receive a t-shirt and medal.
