Senior Center of Leesburg Celebrates New Location

A grand opening was held on Saturday, Oct. 22 to showcase what the new space has to offer

The Senior Center of Leesburg celebrated their new location with a on Saturday, Oct. 22. Tours, demonstrations, entertainment and refreshments were available to hundreds of people who stopped by.

According to Lynn Reid, the center was previously located at 215 Depot Court, S.E., in Leesburg. However, a rising membership and lack of space rendered the site inadequate. The senior center is now located at 102 North Street, N.W., in the same building, which was home to the first public school in Leesburg.

"I think the renovation of a historical space is a very good use of county resources," Reid said. "The site is centrally located and has an abundance of parking. Many people who live in the downtown Leesburg area can walk to the center."

According to Reid, the center benefits adults ages 55 and older with a number of  activities, programs and services in addition to education, socialization, wellness and fitness opportunities.

"People are living longer," said longtime member Rita Sheehan. "Long range, we needed a bigger building. If you were around here when they had the library built they had to put an addition on it. Thinking along those lines, because of the economy, people are going to go back living with their kids. It's not a happy story but the reality is we're going to get more seniors here. So they were right spending the money. Every nickle."

To become a member, Reid said membership fees cost $25 for county residents and only $37.50 for those living outside the area. Anyone who has a membership can also attend any of the three full service senior centers in the county, which includes the Senior Center at Cascades in Sterling, the Carver Center, in Purcellville, or the Dulles South Senior Activity Center in South Riding.
