Loudoun Arts Council Seeks Artists for Public Art Project

A permanent series of three sculptures are expected to be installed at the Village at Leesburg next summer, which will reflect a contemporary representation of Leesburg. The Loudoun Arts Council is currently accepting submissions from local artists who might be interested in creating the displays.

According to Loudoun Arts Council President Rebecca Kite, a panel will select up to five finalists who will be asked to develop a proposal specifically for The Village at Leesburg.

Artists will be interviewed and their proposals will be reviewed before selecting one finalist, Kite said. The outdoor project, which will include three final sculptures, will be installed early next summer.

Village at Leesburg Manager Scott McCarthy said the idea was brought up by the property's owners when he requested to change some of the landscaping at the village.

"What originially happened was the circle in front of the [Cobb Village 12 Cinemas] was horrible," McCarthy said. "It had the worst landscaping in it and I wanted to either landscape it better or I wanted to add a fountain. When I brought it up to the owners they said, 'Why don't we put a sculpture in?'."

McCarthy went to the Loudoun Arts Council for assistance, he said, and is hoping the scupltures will portray Leesburg's local culture. To find out how to participate visit the Loudoun Arts Council’s website www.loudounarts.org.
