With about a week to go until Valentine’s Day, there’s still time to find a special gift for your loved one. How about ordering a singing valentine from Loudoun’s own barbershop quartet?
For $50, the quartet will treat your valentine to an in-person performance at the location and time you choose. Deliveries can be scheduled Feb. 14, 15 or 16, and performances by phone are also available.
“We’ve been doing this for about 10 years, with usually about 20 to 40 valentine orders each year,” said Chorus of the Old Dominion member Dick Smull. “We get all sorts of reactions when we show up and start to sing. Usually it is smiling, tearing up. People enjoy the experience and we enjoy doing it.”
It doesn’t always work out that way. One year, between the time a singing valentine order was made and the delivery time, one couple broke up. On another occasion, the singers arrived and the woman receiving the valentine hid in embarrassment.
“But most of the time, it is delightful,” Smull said. “Typically, a guy can make up for a year's worth of mistakes with this one order.”
The money raised helps the chorus purchase uniforms, music and pay for their director.
The group delivers the singing valentines anywhere in Loudoun County. With each order, the recipient also receives a rose and personalized card. The chorus also will take a photo and email it to the person who ordered the valentine.
With romance on their minds, the group typically sings old-fashioned songs in four-part harmony, including “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” or “Heart of My Heart,” however they also take requests.
There are 22 members of the Chorus of the Old Dominon, which meets at 7:30 p.m. every Thursday at the Leesburg United Methodist Church.
