Dance King Celebrates First Year in Leesburg

Head out for the town's March 1 First Friday to participate in free lessons to live music during the studio's anniversary event.

After a successful first year of teaching hundreds of students how to swing, salsa and tango, Dance King Studios owner and instructor Adam King brims with excitement about the future of his school and the dancing community it has created. “Business is great,” King said. “It has been well received by everyone. Salsa is the most popular, followed by Tango Tuesdays; although Swinger Wednesday is almost always packed, too.”

Classes run Tuesday through Thursday. Participation does not require advance registration, making it easy for anyone to drop in and try a class.

“It’s something fun and social in downtown Leesburg,” said King, a dance instructor in Northern Virginia for more than ten years.

Classes typically draw a “good mix of people,” King said, with an even balance of singles and couples. High school- and college-aged students often attend, contributing youthful energy and enthusiasm in the room, he explained. King’s Wedding Day Bootcamp has helped many couples prepare for their big day.

The idea is to make everyone feel comfortable and confident while on the dance floor.

Dance King recently expanded to Purcellville, where King teaches Salsa Sundays at 7 p.m. at the Bush Tabernacle.

“It is a great space,” King said of the restored landmark.

A singles speed-dating event and a new membership program are planned at the Leesburg studio this year. To celebrate the anniversary, King has planned a free dance party from 7 p.m. to midnight March 1, during Leesburg’s next First Friday. Swing, tango and salsa lessons will be available, with live music by Suz’s Blues Band. And Hidden Brook Winery will set up a wine tasting and gift giveaways.
