Last Call for Lola’s Nutella Cupcakes

Run, don't walk, to the Leesburg bakery for the last of its No. 1 seller until next year.

All good things must come to an end. And so, Lola Cookies & Treats, 109 South King Street, in Leesburg serves the last Nutella Cupcakes of the season Saturday.

That means it’s the last day until next year to buy Lola’s most popular seasonal flavor ever, which dethroned the Red Velvet Cupcake as the top-selling treat in Lola’s six-and-a-half year history. The gluten-free Nutella Cupcake debuted in January.

With spring around the corner, Lola’s is gearing up with new flavors, including Luscious Lemon, gluten-free Carrot Cake Cupcakes and St. Patrick’s Day favorite Chocolate Guinness Cupcakes. So the popular Nutella’s must go to make room.

“They’ll be back in 2014, don’t worry,” said Lorraine “Lola” Hooper, the shop’s owner. “I’m sure our customers will have withdrawal symptoms; I know I will … but absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

The flourless Nutella Cupcakes are made with ground hazelnuts and Nutella, a chocolate-hazelnut spread. House-made Nutella buttercream icing, a drizzle of chocolate ganache and a sprinkling of chopped hazelnuts complete the new best seller.

Hooper had been experimenting with Nutella scones when a customer requested a treat with Nutella, Hooper explained.

“When I switched to cupcakes everything just came together,” she said.
