Otter Creek Scheduled to Close

The business, which first opened its doors in 1998, will close for the last time on March 31

Store Owners Fred and Jennifer Frankenfield announced this week that their store, Otter Creek, will close after operating in the Historic District of Leesburg for the past 15 years.

Otter Creek first opened its doors in 1998 in Leesburg’s Eastern Triangle, where Loudoun and Market Streets meet.

Fred Frankenfield is an Interior Designer with a love of refinishing and repurposing old things. He began with a collection of antiques and his own one-of-a-kind creations, and grew the business into a multiline of American crafts and furnishings. One of their signature lines has been furniture built from reclaimed barnwood.

“We have furnished hundreds of homes with our harvest tables, huntboards and sofa tables," Frankenfield said. "This furniture has been shipped to every part of the country. The beauty and history of the old wood cannot be matched by any new furniture.”

Along the way, the couple added a collection of American artisans, Marlene Dusbiber’s hand carved birds, redware made by Workshops of David T. Smith, and finely cut papersilhouettes by Wendy Wubbels and Pam Dalton, just to name a few.

However, the couple has decided to end their journey along Otter Creek in order to begin a new one.

“Our reasons are everything you can think of: a changing marketplace, medical insurance costs, empty nesting, and our readiness for something new," Jen Frankenfield said. "Otter Creek will always be the treasure of our lives. We have had terrific customers, great artisans that we represent, and the wonderful community of Historic Downtown Leesburg.”

Mr. Frankenfield will continue his Interior Design business as well as his creative projects of repurposing something old in to something new and interesting.

“Saying goodbye is the hardest part. But every good journey comes to an end," Fred Frankenfield said, adding that he hopes customers will stop by to visit and take advantage of the discounts being offered.

The business as a whole will also be for sale, including the existing inventory, customer lists and product lines. Interested parties should contact the current owners as soon as possible.

The Frankenfields said they are open to selling the business and available to provide consulting services to help the new owners launch and maintain the business.

"It would have been great to have had someone to call in our early days," Jen Frankenfield said. "We’ll always support the industry and our local business community.”

Otter Creek is currently offering a storewide discount of 25 percent off. The business is located at 10 South King Street in downtown Leesburg and will close their doors for the last time on March 31. Hours are Monday-Friday 10 to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Call 703-669-0140, email OtterCreekInc@aol.com or visit www.OtterCreekInc.com.
