"Small Business Saturday" Sales

Residents are encouraged to shop locally this Saturday rather than Black Friday or online.

Governor Bob McDonnell is urging Virginians to shop locally Nov. 26 for " Small Business Saturday "on Nov. 25, a nationwide initiative to boost sales at independently owned businesses by supporting local retailers.

This is the second year "Small Business Saturday" has been held. On a Facebook page dedicated to the initiative, over two million people have pledged to shop small.

“Black Friday is for big box stores that open at four in the morning," said The Pink Shop Owner Sola Pallotta. "Small Business Saturday is for us. For every dollar spent at a local store, 68 cents stays in the local economy."

Sola Pallotta, the owner, is offering 10 percent off of one item on Black Friday and "Small Business Saturday". Buy bacon-flavored dental floss or, for less than $20, buy a “global warming coffee mug” with a map of the United States: pour in hot liquid, and California and Florida melt away.  All items are quirky, funny, zany, and fun.

  • 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This Virginia-only store offers “Virginia is for Lovers” t-shirts, peanuts, Virginia wine jellies, homemade candies and chocolates, BBQ sauces, farm products, souvenirs and postcards, history books, Virginia cookbooks, college alumni gifts, Colonial and Civil War memorabilia, historic clothing and toys, horse-lovers gifts, artisan crafts, and Virginia-themed gift baskets. All foods are made in Virginia.

  • 9 Loudoun SW St, 703-771-0042
This unique local shop originated in Middleburg as a dress shop, but the prices of its accessories make them so, well, accessible -- $10 and $15 for earrings – that customers sometimes lose themselves in the necklace displays. Then there are the “fascinators” inspired by the royal wedding in England last spring: fun, whimsical, and suitable to be worn any time of day, according to store manager Jennifer Holder.
