How to Survive #Snowquester 2013

Tips on how to prepare for a snow storm in Leesburg Va

So, by now you’ve heard of the impending #Snowquester blizzard heading toward the Washington DC metro area. I’ve heard forecasters calling for anywhere from a foot of snow in the Leesburg and western Loudoun county to 3”- 6” in the more immediate area of Reston and eastern Fairfax county. If you are reading this today that means you have at least 24-48 hours to prepare for the great #Snowquester of 2013. Here are my top tips for surviving the great #Snowquester;

  1. Drink don’t drive: Just plan on not driving to work for the next day or two. Folks that live in the Metro DC area (this includes me) can’t drive in the white stuff. It simply doesn’t snow enough around here for anyone to be any good at getting around when there is any storm or inclement weather. So, chill at home with your favorite adult beverage and enjoy the white stuff.
  2. Winterize, winterize winterize: If you have not already done so this is a good time to winterize. Start with the outside hose bibs; especially if you turned them on to wash your car in the past few weeks. You might also want to make sure those gutters and down spouts are clear of debris (leaves, mulch, etc.). This will keep snowmelt away from your house. One of the biggest causes of accidents around the house after a snowstorm is ice forming on sidewalks and driveways after a major snowmelt.
  3. Doomsday supplies: Occasionally the Washington Metro area does lose power. This seems to happen much more in older and more rural neighborhoods than some of the newer areas like Ashburn, Brambleton, and parts of Leesburg. When a disruption happens it is usually the electricity that is most impacted (I’ve never lost gas or water service in the 30 years I’ve lived in the DC area). My top must have items for #Snowquester2013; water, wine( helps with the cabin fever ), propane gas for the grill, a lighter (to light the fireplace or gas stove), batteries, easy to cook meals, and yes what list would be complete without bread, milk, and TP!
  4. Save your energy: Every major snowstorm comes with the sad story of the man or woman who had a heart attack while trying to shovel every flake of snow off their driveway the minute the snow stopped coming down. During this snowstorm may I recommend that you repeat bullet point number one on this blog. If you get the inkling to be a hero go have a snowball fight with a kid, any kid, just pick one. If you just can’t stand to see all that snow on your sidewalk or driveway may I recommend a couple of $20 bills to the neighbor’s kids (the ones you just had a snowball fight with might work). Trust me this will beat a trip to the hospital.
