Leesburg's Annual Halloween Parade Canceled

Mayor Kristen C. Umstattd announced the news on her Facebook page this afternoon.

Leesburg Mayor Kristen C. Umstatted announced Monday the 56th annual Halloween Parade, hosted and organized by the Leesburg Kiwanis Club, has been canceled due to Hurricane Sandy.

According to her Facebook page, this may be the first time the event has ever seen a cancellation.

"Our crews will be tied up well into Thursday and beyond with debris cleanup on the streets. If high winds remove roof shingles, we anticipate roofing nails will be littering the streets, making passage hazardous for any vehicles until we can get them cleaned up," Umstattd said. "Dominion Power anticipates that over 1 million customers will lose power and that restoration of power will take longer than usual because restoration efforts can't begin until all wind has moved out of the area. Stay safe."

One of the oldest Halloween parades in the eastern United States, the cancellation has a number of people upset.

Umstattd said that staffing is a contributing factor, as town emergency staff will be working around the clock on recovery operations at least through Wednesday.

The good news is that if the weather cooperates there is always door to door trick-or-treating.

What are your plans now that the Halloween parade is canceled? Will you still go out?
