Fall Color Tour Kicks Off Saturday

The two day event invites everyone to explore Loudoun County and everything it has to offer

The is scheduled to take place this Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. The free self-guided driving tour allows visitors to drive down tree-lined country roads to more than 30 working Loudoun County farms. Fourteen wineries, a brewery and distillery are also participating in this year’s tour.

“It’s just a way for you to get out and see what the county really has to offer,” said Loudoun County Department of Economic Development Marketing Coordinator Coco Lyons. She said she never realized how many farms and wineries were actually located within the county.

“It’s just a really good way to explore. A lot of the locations aren’t usually open Monday through Friday to the general public so this allows you kind of that private VIP access to some of these farms that you would never generally get the opportunity to see.”

The fall tour has been held for at least ten years, Lyons said, and has had room to evolve each year.

“Last year [the tour] didn’t have any wineries, distillers or breweries. Just farms,” Lyons said. “So for us to have close to 50 locations, venues, this year it just shows how much it has evolved in one year.”

New to the Fall Color Tour this year is Blooming Hill, which offers four acres of tended gardens with over 500 lavender plants in more than 40 different varieties. All of the plants are grown and sold in the garden shop right on the property in Purcellville.

Also, back by popular demand is Donkey Meadows, a small farm dedicated to breeding and raising Mammoth donkeys. Adults and children can participate in donkey rides offered from noon to 2 pm for a $5 fee. Lyons said that each location on the tour will feature some type of educational component so everyone can learn something new.

In the past, Lyons said the tour has been well attended. Not only is it just from people who live in Loudon County but for anyone who is interested in seeing what Loudoun County has to offer.

The best part about the fall tour, Lyons said, is it’s a beautiful time of year to view all of the color in the Loudoun Valleys, with views of the Blue Ridge, Short Hill and Sugarloaf Mountains.

“The Fall Color Tour is a great opportunity for people to learn about how farm animals are raised, how their food is grown and where their wine comes from”, said Loudoun County Agricultural Development Officer Kellie Boles. “It is a great way for families and friends to experience, and learn, what makes Loudoun County so unique.”

Brochures for the Fall Color Tour are available at several locations including the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development on the fifth floor of the Loudoun County Government Center, located at 1 Harrison Street, S.E., in Leesburg.

You can also visit any branch of the Loudoun County Public Libraries to pick up a copy of the tour brochure which includes descriptions of each site on the tour and directions. You may request to have a brochure mailed to you by calling 703-737-8322 or e-mailing info@loudounfarms.org.
