More Snow on the Way?

National Weather Service predicts two- five inches possible overnight

Update, 2:57 p.m.: The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning effective from 9 p.m. today to 7 a.m. Tuesday. This warning superseeds to previously-issued winter weather advisory.

Following last week’s high temperatures, high winds and fire warnings, Leesburg and the surrounding area can expect two – five inches of snow over night, according to the National Weather Service.

A strong front is moving through the region, bringing moist southern air into contact with a high pressure system from Canada, according to Calvin Meadows, a spokesman for the Washington/Baltimore region of the National Weather Service.

Meadows said the front will slowly cross the region this afternoon, bringing with it rain that has already been observed. As colder air filters in behind a low pressure system moving eastward, the rain may mix with sleet, before turning over to snow at about 1 a.m., he said.

“It looks like there will be enough precipitation to yield two – five inches of snow,” Meadows said.

He said snow should continue until about 7 a.m. on Tuesday.
