Musical Performances, Stories to Showcase War of 1812

For the first time ever, the Town of Leesburg will celebrate the War of 1812 during a musical event with the Loudoun Symphony, West Point Alumni Glee Club, and Journey Through Hallowed Ground, this Sunday at Ida Lee Park.

"1812: An American Celebration" will describe the war in both music and words.

Ara Bagdasarian, president of the Loudoun Symphony Board of Directors, said that Leesburg has a unique place in the war’s history, which will help make this weekend’s event so special.

“This was the temporary capital when Dolly Madison had the documents moved to Leesburg,” he said, referring to the burning of Washington in 1812 when President and Dolly Madison fled the White House. Flames from downtown D.C. were so bright they could be seen in Leesburg, according to White House historians. 

“The concert goers are actually going to be immersed in a history that they can not experience anywhere else. Geographically, it’s unique and it’s extremely relevant,” Bagdasarian said.

Back in June, the Leesburg Town Council approved a fee waiver in the amount of $4,300 in order to turn the idea into a reality. Since then, the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra has been busy finalizing details.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Bagdasarian said. “It was just a concept a few months ago and it’s very quickly solidifying and becoming a reality.” 

Gates will open this Sunday, Sept. 23, beginning at 2 p.m. Performances will being with live fife and drum and patriotic choral performances, followed by an appearance with The West Point Alumni Glee Club and patriotic music performed by the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra.

“I like to say the history comes alive this Sunday because that’s really what it is. It’s not the music alone. It’s the history, the narration, the story telling,” Bagdasarian said. “I think this is going to be an event that people will remember for their entire lives. Not only is the setting going to be beautiful, it’s a great way for the family to spend a fall Sunday afternoon."
