Snow Storm Affects Leesburg Area

A mix of rain, sleet and snow are expected to continue until 6 p.m.

It’s no Halloween trick…it’s snowing in Leesburg and a winter storm warning remains in effect for our area until 6 p.m. this evening.

As a result, a number of events were cancelled on Saturday due to cold temperatures and hazardous conditions. freshman Sammie Sheedy said she was supposed to have a band competition at her school earlier in the day. Instead, she sat outside of , admiring the snowfall.

“I think it’s pretty magical,” Sheedy said. “It usually doesn’t even snow until after Christmas, if at all. I love getting a lot of snow. It’s really fun.”

Leesburg resident Steve Nagel parked his SUV outside of the where he joined two of his friends. Originally from Southern California, Nagel said he’s all for this weekend’s weather.  

“It’s outstanding,” Nagel said. “When I bought this SUV I bought it for these types of days. So yes I’m getting my money’s worth. I love it.”

His friend, Ron Dexter, arrived in Leesburg, from Sacramento, Ca., on Thursday.  Although he knew that there was a cold front forecasted he didn’t expect to see snow during his visit.

“I love the snow but it kind of throws a monkey wrench in our plans,” Dexter said. “We’ll just deal with it.”

Just down the road, Owner and Manager Scott Warner stood outside of the , salting his sidewalks. Although the weather might slow things down earlier in the day, Warner said he doesn’t expect things to be quiet.

“It’s Halloween weekend so that makes a big difference,” Warner said. “I love the snow. Everybody gets out one way or another and it’s the first snow. People like the first snow.”

The National Weather Service is reporting four to six inches of snow across higher elevations while a mix of rain, sleet and snow will continue to fall in the Leesburg area until later this afternoon. Temperatures will be in the lower to mid 30s with winds gusts up to 20 mph.

Heavy, wet snow if most likely to accumulate on trees, which could cause broken limbs and power outages. The roads are slick and it is recommended that everyone uses caution when traveling on the roads.
