Town Council Approves Land Purchase for Sycolin Road

Phase III of the widening project is scheduled to begin in spring of 2013. The town must acquire property in order to expand the road from two lanes to four.

The Town Council voted 6-0-1 Tuesday night to approve a resolution that will allow right of way dedications and easements to be aquired for Phase III of the Sycolin Road widening project. Construction is planned to take place in spring of 2013 with construction beginning in the summer.

Within the past several years, Loudoun County has improved the portion of Sycolin Road immediately south of the town limits. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has reconstructed the previously unpaved segments between the town and Belmont Ridge Road. Since then, traffic volumes have increased significantly.

As a result, Acting Director of Capital Projects Renee LaFollette said that the road will be expanded from two lanes to four.

“This is the first step of our land acquisition process,” LaFollette said, adding that the project will extend from just north of Battlefield Parkway, through the Hope Parkway intersection. It will tie into VDOT's Sycolin overpass of the Rt. 7/15 bypass project.

LaFollette said that design work for Phase III is scheduled to be complete over the next ten months. Utility relocation could begin towards the beginning of 2013.

Following the Town Council’s approval, offers can now be made to property owners from whom right of way dedications and easements are needed. LaFollette said she does not anticipate to present the award of contract until late summer of next year.
