ELECTION UPDATE: Campaign Finance, Ads, Precincts, 33rd State Senate Special Election

John Whitbeck, Jennifer Wexton, Joe May vie for General Assembly seat vacated by AG Herring.

Tuesday’s Special Election for Virginia’s 33rd State Senate seat will go on regardless of weather conditions, election officials announced Monday. The forecast is calling for 6-10 inches of snow Tuesday.

Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 in the race to replace Attorney General Mark Herring, who vacated the seat earlier this month, in the General Assembly. Three candidates have thrown their hats in the ring: Joe T. May (I), Jennifer T. Wexton (D) and John C.L. Whitbeck Jr. (R).

The winner will serve out the remainder of Herring’s term, which expires Jan. 13, 2016.

Wexton ($645,521) has far outraised her opponents in the race, according to the most recent reports, which account for contributions up to Jan. 10. Whitbeck had raised $235,715 up to that point, while May had raised $168,058. Wexton also had the most cash left on hand as of Jan. 10, $155,803, compared with Whitbeck’s $59,286 and May’s $46,563.

Some of the money the candidates raised has been used on television ads, each taking a completely different angle. Wexton released a television spot focusing on women’s rights and her background as a prosecutor (Republicans accused her of calling her opponents rapists and criminals; judge for yourself). Whitbeck released a TV ad saying his opponents would be too quick to raise taxes. May released possibly the most intriguing ad, calling on 33rd Senate District residents to “vote for the nerd.”

The biggest donors to the campaigns were political parties and previous campaigns.

Wexton took in $313,000 from Virginia’s Democratic Senate Caucus, $35,000 from the Democratic Party of Virginia and $25,000 from Sen. Richard Saslaw’s campaign fund.

The Republican Party of Virginia gave Whitbeck $85,143 and the Virginia Republican Senate Caucus gave him $72,588. Another large donor for Whitbeck included the Middle Resolution PAC, $55,400.

May’s largest contributor was his previous campaign for state delegate, $40,308. May was defeated in the Republican Primary for delegate by David LaRock, who won the seat in November.

All of the candidates have experience. May served 20 years in the Virginia House of Delegates. Whitbeck previously ran for 10th District delegate in 2011, while Wexton previously ran for Loudoun Commonwealth’s Attorney the same year.
