ADAMS Plans Interfaith Ramadan Iftar in Sterling Sunday

Each year Muslims fast during Ramadan as part of the Five Pillars of Islam.

The All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) has planned its 6th annual National Interfaith Ramadan Iftar at 7 p.m. July 28 at the group’s main facility, 46903 Sugarland Road, in Sterling.

Ramadan is a period of spiritual reflection, renewal and community service for Muslims. The Ramadan fast is performed to learn discipline, self-restraint and generosity, while obeying God’s commandments.

Fasting – along with the declaration of faith, daily prayers, charity, and pilgrimage to Mecca – is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Because Ramadan is a lunar month, it begins about 11 days earlier each year. Communal prayers called Eid ul-Fitr, or Feast of Fast-Breaking, mark the end of Ramadan. Eid ul-Fitr takes place Aug. 8 this year.
