A series of auto tampering complaints and larcenies in the
Exeter, Fox Ridge and Tavistock communities are under investigation by the
Leesburg Police Department.
The incidents were reported between Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19, and occurred late at night or early in the morning, according to a police report.
In most cases, personal items left in plain view were taken from unlocked vehicles, including money, prescription drugs, electronic devices, laptop computers, cell phones and a handgun.
In the majority of the cases, the vehicles were unlocked and personal belongings were left inside in plain view. Stolen items included currency, prescription medication, personal electronic devices, laptop computers, cell phones, and a handgun.
The Leesburg Police Department reminds residents not to leave items in plain view and to lock unattended vehicles.
According to police, the suspects in this case roamed neighborhoods looking for unlocked vehicles; locking vehicles and taking valuable inside or hiding them can help deter such crime.
Also make sure to keep copies of serial numbers and take pictures of valuables in case they are taken, so that they can be returned if found.
