Leesburg Police See Uptick in Theft from Vehicles

The Leesburg Police Department's Lock, Take, Hide or Lose Program reminds residents to secure vehicles and belongings, or potentially create "a crime of opportunity"

In the past week, Leesburg Police have seen an uptick auto tampering and thefts from vehicles and want to remind residents to be cautious.

These incidents have taken place late at night, mostly in the North East quadrant of town and most of the vehicles were left unlocked with valuables in plain view, according to a press release.

Items that have been stolen include personal electronics, cell phones and GPS.

“The Leesburg Police Department reminds everyone to take the few seconds to lock your car and not make it so easy to become a victim,” the release states.

Police also reminded residents to report suspicious activity immediately, and to remember to lock car doors, take keys and any valuables out of the vehicle or hide valuables if you don’t take them with you.

“Larceny from Auto is a regional problem,” the release states. “Simply locking one’s car can help prevent this crime from every occurring.”
