Police Remind Drivers to be Cautious if Hurricane Irene Hits Leesburg

Rainy conditions could make for perilous driving this weekend. Drivers warned to limit trips to necessity.

Editor's note: the following comes from a press release from the Leesburg Police Department. It has not been edited.

Due to the projected weather forecast calling for rainy conditions that could be extreme this weekend, the Leesburg Police Department is asking all drivers to drive responsibly this weekend.   Check weather conditions before traveling by car.   Driving in conditions where visibility is bad can result in car crashes.    Should the rain create flooding conditions, avoid low lying areas and have a secondary route identified should you encounter dangerous road ways.  Do not attempt to drive through high water! Flooding could compromise a road way and the damage could be hidden from view under the water.    Watch for standing water near sewer grates and curbs. Standing water can cause a car to hydroplane.   If you do have to travel in bad weather, adjust your driving habits to the weather conditions.   Drivers are expected to slow down in bad weather conditions which means you may have to drive below the posted speed limit.

If weather conditions are bad this weekend, please limit your driving or stay off the roads entirely.  Run errands and take care of any shopping needs before the storm affects our area.
