Sheriff's Office Warns Residents of Phone Scam in Loudoun

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office warned residents Monday of a telephone scam in which the caller impersonates a member of the law enforcement community and attempts to collect money to take care of a fine.

The caller may identify himself as a Loudoun County deputy or some other law enforcement official, according to an LCSO press release. The caller then indicates that the person being contacted has a warrant out for their arrest, which could have resulted from traffic offenses, back taxes or debt, according to the release.

The people receiving the call are then advised the fine may be paid by obtaining a “green dot” money card or by wiring the fine. Those who said they would not pay were threatened with arrest, according to the release.

No law enforcement official would request the collection of a fine over the phone, according to the sheriff’s office.

Several such calls have been reported.
