Butler Kicks Off House of Delegates Campaign

Leesburg Councilman pledges to be "pro-business," and to focus on jobs, public safety, education, and health care.

Characterizing himself as the only elected officeholder in the race, Leesburg Town Councilman Dave Butler on Sunday launched his campaign for the 10th District seat in the Virginia General Assembly.

He made four stops in the newly-drawn 10th, beginning at the Leesburg Airport and hopscotching to the Middleburg Community Center and a barbeque restaurant in Berryville before ending the day at the Winchester Circuit Courthouse.

Butler will face one of three Republicans in the general election after a primary on Aug. 23 decides among them. All three, as well as Butler, live at the extreme east end of a district that stretches from Belmont Ridge Road east of Leesburg to I-81 just outside the city of Winchester. Democrat James “Jim” P. Magner, an Ashburn attorney, withdrew from the race.

The new district includes southern parts of Loudoun, Clarke, and Frederick counties and the towns of Leesburg and Middleburg. The communities of Aldie, St. Louis, Millwood, White Post, and Shenandoah are within its boundaries.

Land use attorney Randy Minchew of Leesburg; family law attorney John Whitbeck of Lansdowne, and health services consultant Cara Townsend of River Creek are vying for the Republican nomination to contest Butler for the 10th District seat. No independents have yet announced.

Butler, who has served on the town council since 2008, is an engineer and chief security officer for a Sterling firm.

Characterizing himself as “pro-business” and the only moderate in the 10th District race for the Virginia House of Delegates, Butler said if elected, he would focus on jobs, public safety, education, and health care.
