Connaughton, Prince William Board Spar Over Bi-County Parkway

Virginia will press forward with the road, Secretary of Transportation and former PW chairman Sean Connaughton said this week.

Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sean Connaughton took a trip to Prince William County to discuss the planned Bi-County Parkway and signaled that current opposition would not stop the road.

Connaughton, who formerly served as chairman of the Prince William board, attended the meeting assuage concerns about the road, but found that opponents were vocal persistent. However, all such project face opposition he said.

“We believe it’s essential to dealing with today’s traffic problems, which we all know exist, and will provide better access to Dulles Airport and deal with the increased population,” Connaughton said.

But opponents did not back down and Prince William supervisors reminded Connaughton that those were their constiuents.

“I’m sure you can hear the frustration and disappointment in the room,” said Pete Candland, Gainesville district supervisor, while addressing Connaughton. “Our responsibility is not to cure these regional or state level problems, it’s to represent the people who elected us to sit up here.”
