Loudoun, Leesburg Vote for Obama and Local Candidates

According to the Virginia State Board of Elections, Obama received 81,900 votes (51.52 percent) in Loudoun County. His opponent, former Gov. Mitt Romney received 74,793 votes (47.05 percent).

Nationwide, Barack Obama was re-elected to another term as president, which was officially announced live on CNN at 11:18 p.m. Tuesday — long before Virginia's results were finalized.

Leesburg residents also had the opportunity to vote for candidates appearing on the ballot for mayor and town council. Results, which can be seen here, show that Mayor Kristen C. Umstattd will continue her role for yet another term.

"I want to thank all of our wonderful Leesburg residents for your faith in me. I am deeply moved by your decision to re-elect me as mayor of the best town in the country. God bless all of you," Umstattd posted on her Facebook page on Tuesday.

She thanked her opponent Linda Shotton for her graciousness and congratulated council members Dave Butler, Tom Dunn, and Katie Sheldon Hammler, who were all re-elected. You can read more about the Leesburg Town Council results and reactions here.

Other candidates who saw a victory Tuesday night included Rep. Frank Wolf in the 10th Congressional District. As of 9:26 a.m. Wednesday, 194 of 195 precincts in the district had reported their results.

Rep. Frank Wolf has 58.63 percent of the vote, Kristin Cabral has 38.47 percent of the vote and Kevin Chisholm has 2.77 percent of the vote.

Tim Kaine won the U.S. Senate race. Final unofficial results around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday showed Tim Kaine with 51.89 percent of the state vote to Republican challenger George Allen's 47.92 percent of the vote across Virginia.

Virginia residents also voted to pass two amendments to the Virginia Constitution when they went out to the polls Tuesday. About 75 percent of voters, more than 2.3 million people, voted "yes" to amending the state's eminent domain policies. About 82 percent of voters, or 2.6 million people, said yes to question 2, which will allow the General Assembly to postpone its veto session in the event of scheduling conflicts of religious holidays.
