Kelly Burk and Dwight Dopilka, Official Candidates for Town Council

As of Friday, Feb. 17, both candidates were the only two who have decided to run during the special election.

Friday was the deadline for prospective candidates to file to run in the Leesburg special election on April 14. However, as of the 5 p.m. deadline, former Supervisor Kelly Burk and Leesburg resident Dwight Dopilka were the only two candidates who will run.

Burk officially announced her candidacy for Town Council on Feb. 3 during Leesburg’s First Friday event. She previously served the on the council back in 2004 and said there are a number of reasons she decided to run again.

“I had a large number of people within the community that asked me to consider it and when I looked at it, it sure made a lot of sense,” Burk said. “I’ve served on the Council before, I was on the Board of Supervisors obviously and now I can take what I learned at the supervisor level and bring it back to the Council.”

Less than a week after Burk’s announcement Dopilka, a 10-year resident of the town, announced his candidacy. He was recently appointed to serve as the Board of Supervisors' liaison to the Leesburg Airport Commission and is involved Leesburg Toastmasters and Loudoun Amateur Radio Group.

Voters in Leesburg will go to the polls on April 17 to elect a new member for the Town Council. Whoever is elected to the position will fill the remainder of the term vacated by Councilman Kenneth D. Reid upon his election to the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors
