Kelly Burk Wins Town Council Election

Burk will rejoin the Town Council next week after securing 53 percent of the votes.

Kelly Burk will rejoin the Town Council next week after winning Tuesday’s special election in Leesburg.

Burk was one of two candidates running for a seat that was recently vacated by Ken Reid upon his election to the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. The term will expire on Dec. 31, 2014.

Unofficial results showed Burk had 1,237 votes (53.13 percent) compared to her opponent Dwight Dopilka who had 1,089 (46.77 percent) votes. According to the Board of Elections, 2,331 people voted in the special election.

A breakdown of each precinct and its results was reported on Leesburg Patch early Tuesday evening. Although there are some districts that are very competitive, Burk said she was pleased with the results. 

“It’s very exciting. It really is,” said Burk, who previously served on the Town Council in 2004 prior to representing Leesburg on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. “I worked hard to get the voters out and I’m just delighted. I think this is a great opportunity and I’m so excited.”

To celebrate, Burk met with a number of supporters at  in historic downtown Leesburg Tuesday night. Among them was Town Council member Dave Butler who said he looks forward to working with Burk for the first time.

“Not only does she have the experience on the council but she also has experience on the Board of Supervisors,” Butler said. “Having better relationships with the county is always a good thing. So I am looking forward to it.”

Miriam Nasuti said she was “thrilled that Kelly won.” It’s clear that she is committed to public service, she said, and is a person who truly cares.

“As I said to her when I found out she won tonight, ‘Welcome home. Welcome back to where I believe you should be.'”

Burk said she looks forward to focusing on Leesburg and issues that are most important to the local residents. She will join the Town Council for their next work session and public hearing next week.
