Leesburg Farmers Market Steps into Fall

Sunny day attracts shoppers looking for products that are locally grown and produced.

Hundreds of shoppers turned out at the Leesburg Farmers Market on a bright, sunny Saturday morning to sample and purchase a variety of products.

Although the Leesburg Saturday Summer Farmers Market officially runs through October 29, some of the products, such as apples, pumpkins and squash, heralded the arrival of fall.

Diane DuCharm of Leesburg said that she had bought some Asian pears from Beechwood Orchards, of Biglersville, Pa., and some cherry tomatoes “from the West Virginia guy.”

“This is the season for squash and cantaloupes,” she said, noting that even though these cantaloupes don’t come from Colorado, she makes sure to wash them thoroughly. “The lettuce looked good today, too,” she added.

Wyatt Kesecker, of Quail Hollow Farm in Berkeley Springs, W.V., said that Quail Hollow had a good pumpkin crop this year.

“They didn’t get real big, but they’re nice pumpkins,” he said, explaining that Morgan County, W.V., had a much drier season than Loudoun County.  “We went a long time without water,” he said.

While some of the vendors were from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and the Shenandoah Valley, many were from Leesburg and surrounding Loudoun County.

Among the Leesburg businesses represented were Chase Your Tail Bakery, , Mill Road Farm (grass-fed Angus beef, lamb and honey), (cheese, butter and yogurt), South Street Under (baked goods), and Don’s Dahlias Etc. (flowers).

Loudoun County businesses included Chicama Run Farm of Purcellville (eggs, beef, goat and pork), Hidden Creek Apiary of Hillsboro (honey, vegetables and shiitake mushrooms), Willow Hawk Farm of Lovettsville (lamb, pelts and wool), Potomac Vegetable Farm of Purcellville, Milcreek Farms of Lovettsville (lamb, beef, goat and eggs), Chef Eloy’s Kickin’ Salsa of Sterling, and Winding Woods Farm of Purcellville (goat milk soap and lotion bars).

DuCharm summed up the mood of many of the shoppers and vendors, who were enjoying outdoor shopping on a sunny, fall morning. “It’s just such a beautiful day,” she said.

The Leesburg Farmers Market is located in the parking lot of the Virginia Village shopping center on Catoctin Circle, S.E.
