Leesburg's Downtown Post Office on USPS List for Possible Closure, Consolidation

The United States Postal Service announced a study today of 3,700 locations which could be closed or consolidated to cut costs

The United States Postal Service maintains one of the largest retail networks in the country, but fears that most of its customers are doing business online.

To cut costs, the USPS announced today that it would consider the closure or consolidation of 3,700 retail offices.

“As more customers choose to conduct their postal business online, on their smart phones and at their favorite shopping destinations, the need for the U.S. Postal Service to maintain its nearly 32,000 retail offices — the largest retail network in the country — diminishes,” reads the USPS press release.

One of those offices on the list of locations in Virginia's portion of the study is the Downtown Leesburg Station.

The USPS maintains a network of 32,000 retail locations, and partners with 70,000 third party retailers, according to the release. About 35 percent of its business is conducted in grocery stores, drug stores, office supply stores, retail chains, self-service kiosks, ATMs and usps.com, the release reads.
