Loudoun's Managed Deer Hunt Lottery Registration Opens

Those interested in participating in the October hunt at Banshee Reeks can register for the lottery through Aug. 31.

Registration for the first of Loudoun County’s two managed deer hunt lotteries begins today. The managed deer hunts are used to control the population of deer at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve and hunters are chosen through lotteries.

The Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services has planned two separate three-day hunts at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve:

  • October 4, 11 and 18
  • December 6, 13 and 20, 2013

Members of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and the parks department have concluded that declining health of deer in the park can be attributed to their overpopulation.

An archery-only event is planned for October, while the December hunt will permit the use of shotguns and bows. Participants will be allowed to hunt one buck of up to four points after first killing one antlerless deer.

The October hunt is an archery-only event. The December hunt will be a shotgun and archery event. New this year, hunters will be allowed to harvest a buck, with a minimum of four points total, after harvesting one antlerless deer.
