School Board Votes Against Seat Belt Installation

A final vote of 7-0-1-1 was made Tuesday night regarding the future installation of three-point harnessed seat belts inside new Loudoun County school buses.

On Tuesday, the Loudoun County School Board voted against the future installation of three-point harnessed seatbelts in all new school buses.

The decision came shortly after a recommendation was made by the Health, Safety and Wellness Committee that as much as $500,000 could be saved if the seatbelts were no longer installed.

School Board Member Tom Reed (At Large) said that the major factor in the board's decision was that students don’t wear the seat belts, which ends up being a waste of money.

Studies have also shown that there is no increase in student safety by wearing the seat belts, he said.
