Studio Partnership Discussed Among Town Council, Supervisors

Comcast Cable, which currently provides coverage of government meetings, is scheduled to close later this year. Both the Town Council and Board of Supervisors are considering a new access system.

The Leesburg Town Council met with the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Monday night where they discussed Comcast Cable, in Ashburn, which is scheduled to close later this year.

Currently, the public access channel provides coverage of local government meetings for residents living within the county.

Chairman Scott York (R- At Large) said he’d like to see the county, town and schools come together to create a new access system, which would allow such programming to continue. He suggested creating a 501-C3 and creating a small staff.

Councilman Marty Martinez said he was concerned about where a the new channel would be housed.

In response, Oliver Peters of the Loudoun Cable Commission suggested the use of the old studio including Capital Production Television, located at Morven Park. Equipment would be available and donations may be possible to the new entity, he said.

Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio (R - Sterling) said he felt it would be a big task and that the scope should not be underestimated. However, York stressed that he was only interested in whether or not both bodies would be interested in the possibility. Everyone was in agreement that they’d like to look into it furthermore.

“There may be some real ways to identify a win-win and I think it’s worth the effort to look at it,” said Leesburg’s Vice Mayor Kevin Wright.
